Created in 1970 by the UN General Assembly, the United Nations Volunteers(UNV) program mobilizes qualified volunteers to serve in countries throughout the world.

Approximately 7000 volunteers serve each year in developing countries. More than 30,000 volunteers have served in over 140 countries since 1971.

Programs for which UNV supplies pre-qualified volunteers include long-term development work, peacekeeping and humanitarian projects and to help run local and national elections. The UNV program is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
