Founded on March 1, 1961 during the administration of President John F. Kennedy, the Peace Corps is an international volunteer organization of the U.S. government.
Since its founding the Peace Corps has had over 187,000 volunteers serve in more than 139 countries.
Volunteers work on projects ranging from small business development to Aids education and environmental preservation. There is no upper age limit to serve in the Peace Corps and volunteers in their eighties are currently serving. Approximately 6 percent of volunteers are over 50.
